Science explains why lowering cholesterol is not always good

I translated this article because it is very clear and I could not write it better. It contains valuable information for health that I want to share with as many people as possible.

"You have ‘cholesterol’  (i.e. ‘high cholesterol’)? Good news!

Dear reader,

How would you react if I told you:

“   - Having high cholesterol, up to 4 grams (10 mmmo/L) is not sign of an imminent heart attack; it is absolutely not a sword of Damocles that threatens your life;

   - And millions of people would therefore follow unnecessary treatment to lower cholesterol, with serious side effects that come as a result.”

I'm sure it would be hard to believe.

That would be logical, since for years it has been said everywhere in the media and by your doctor, that cholesterol is bad for the arteries.

But the truth is very different, as you will see.

It took me a while to accept it myself. I admit it was hard for me to imagine that today a huge misinformation like that is still possible in the 21st century.

Even if I know the power of the influence if the pharmaceutical industry, which earns every year tens of billions of euro, thanks to its "anti-cholesterol drugs", I was skeptical.

But when I did extensive research, with the best independent experts, I immediately changed my mind.

And I assure you: there is no need to be a biochemistry expert to understand the theory of "bad cholesterol" is flawed.

Researchers and doctors have given us a brave full demonstration. This is the case of Dr. Michel Lorgevil and Professor Philippe Even, and I encourage you to read their books if you have high cholesterol. [1]

But let me give you some facts, not contested by anyone, that should be enough to make you seriously doubt the "official story."

The figures that have been kept hidden for 40 years
It begins with the surprising results of a large study conducted in 1970, at a time when cholesterol began to be accused of all evils.

Strangely, the results of this study have been hidden, censored for 40 years. But finally we have just been published on 12 April 2016 in the British Medical Journal, a peer-reviewed medical journal. [2]

It is easy to see why this study does not please everyone ...

For several years, researchers followed 9400 patients in institutions (hospitals or nursing homes). This enabled them to control their meals with a precision of a watchmaker, and to do regular blood tests.

They formed two groups of patients: the first group was to follow the classic dietary rules of the time, rich in animal fats (butter, in particular). The second, followed a diet low in animal fat, but rich in corn oil.

The theory then was that the animal fats (called "saturated") cause cholesterol growth and clog arteries. On the contrary, the so-called poly- or monounsaturated fats such as corn oil or sunflower were supposed to be good for the heart.

As expected, patients in the group "corn oil" saw their cholesterol levels decrease, unlike those of the "animal fat" group.

The "small" problem is that, despite the drop in their cholesterol, they had undergone 2 times more heart attacks than the others (41% versus 21% among the dead). And among the ones older than 65, the group "Corn Oil" had also experienced 15% more deaths!

Even more surprising: the more their cholesterol was down, the more mortality was high. According to the statistical analysis, any loss of 0.3 points in their total cholesterol increased the risk of death by 22%.

When a "super efficient" drug is abandoned in the open field
Another recent event violently contradicted the "official" theory, which says that there is a "good" and a "bad" cholesterol.

It all started with the discovery of a new and powerful anti-cholesterol molecule, evacetrapib, manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly.

The effects of this molecule are quite amazing: it manages to dramatically increase the "good" cholesterol (HDL) by 130%, while lowering the "bad" cholesterol (LDL) by 37%.

This should actually reduce the number of heart attacks, right?

Well, not at all. The results arrived April 3, 2016: Patients who have taken this pill did not had fewer heart attacks than those who took a placebo. [3]

The study leader, Dr. Stephen Nicholls, has confessed his discomfort:

"We had a drug that seemed to act on all that was necessary, how is it that a treatment that reduces something identified as dangerous does not cause any advantage?" [4]

These results were so annoying for the "official theory" that the study was stopped along the way. And the pharmaceutical company announced that it had totally abandoned the search of this "miracle pill".

It was time to stop spending, in fact, because it is at least the fifth study which shows that there is no interest in artificially increasing the "good" cholesterol (HDL). [5]

For what regards "bad cholesterol" (LDL), simply go to Japan to understand that there is nothing inherently bad.

The Japanese have high cholesterol and are doing well, thanks
We have been known since 1970 that certain populations have few cardiac events despite high cholesterol. This is the case in particular of the Inuit of Greenland, whose traditional diet is rich in animal fats (seals, reindeer, ...).

But the style of Inuit life is so far from the Western world that we have not paid attention.

Japan on the other hand, it is a school case.
In the early 1980s, the country was cited as the best example of the validity of the "cholesterol theory." See how their cholesterol is low, we were told ... That's why they have so few cases of heart disease!

Except that in the meantime the cholesterol level in Japan has increased sharply and reached the Western countries. Now they have to have a net increase of cardiovascular diseases, don’t they?

Not at all. They even have less heart disease than before! And in total, they have 3-4 times less than in Western countries! [6]

Even more disturbing: recent data show that the Japanese are living longer the more their "bad" cholesterol (LDL) is high. [7]

This is another "unexplained" fact if you believe the official theory. But it is not the only one:

Three numeric facts that contradict the "official cholesterol theory"
Here are three more little known facts about cholesterol. They are not contradicted by anyone, but people are careful not to shout them from the rooftops.

Fact 1: having too little cholesterol is dangerous.

It is well known in the medical world that an insufficient cholesterol is very problematic.

Children born deficient in cholesterol have cognitive delays, impaired immune system and digestive problems. When you give them cholesterol, their general condition improves.

In general, it was observed that low cholesterol (less than 1.6 g) was statistically associated with an increased risk of cerebral hemorrhage and cancer. [8]

Fact 2: patients hospitalized for a heart disease do not have high cholesterol

It is a large 2009 study that found "the pot with roses".

When the researchers examined the cholesterol level of 232,000 patients hospitalized for a heart disease, they found that their levels of "bad" (LDL) were ... perfectly okay (1.05 g)! [9]

And that is not explained by the fact that they were taking drugs that lower cholesterol: only 20% of them were under statin.

These results have been confirmed since then. Worse: among patients hospitalized after a heart attack, it is those who had lower LDL cholesterol (less than 0.77), who are the more likely to die! [10]

Fact 3: having high cholesterol protects the elderly against cancer and other diseases

The studies are clear: for those over 85, those who have more cholesterol live longer, in part because they are better protected against cancer and infections. [11]

All these facts put together, torpedo the "official theory" of cholesterol.

It remains the dominant theory, because it always takes a long time before the official authorities acknowledge that they are massively and seriously wrong.

But when one looks carefully, one can already see the beginning of the announced defeat.

Twists
The first clap of thunder came from the American Heart Association.

In 2013, it suggested that it was not necessary to set cholesterol lowering goals. For US cardiologists, the important thing is to take cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins), and not to try to get a particular cholesterol.

In other words, they begin to retreat ... It was difficult to continue to defend the "cholesterol theory", but they were trying to save the "soldier statins", which bring so much money to the pharmaceutical industry.

In February 2015, it was the turn of one of the most important supporters of these drugs (statins), Sir Rory Collins, to throw a stone in the pond. Rather, a rock.

Sir Collins is chief of two private research consortia (partly financed by the pharmaceutical industry), which have produced many of the studies on drugs to lower cholesterol for 20 years.

Now this "Pope of statins" acknowledged blandly that he and his research group had never seriously studied the side effects of statins!

Because? Because, he confessed his belief that statins save life was so high that he wanted to avoid that patients be alarmed if they were revealed their toxic effects.

This is incredible! And it shows that you should never give blind trust to studies funded by the pharmaceutical industry or the experts who have ties of interest with it.

Because in reality, we begin to know well the deleterious effects of statins: muscle pain, diabetes, cancer, dementia, etc. It will take years to accurately identify the scope of the disaster, but if you are taking statins, read as soon as possible "L 'horrible truth about cholesterol medicines, "Dr. Michel Lorgevil.

Last act: in January 2016, the Secretary of State for the US Health has recognized that it was useless to reduce the consumption of high-cholesterol foods.

For years, US authorities have recommended to limit dietary cholesterol, demonizing magnificent foods like eggs.

It 's over now, and this is another nail in the coffin of the great theory of bad cholesterol.

What to do if you have high cholesterol
In short, it is not surprising that such a substance vital to the health of each of our cells may not be a direct cause of heart disease.

"To want to understand and address these problems by measuring a single parameter, such as the concentration of cholesterol in the blood, and prescribing a drug that decreases it, reveals a disconcerting simplicity," says Dr. Lorgeril.

This does not mean that cholesterol can never be detrimental, obviously.

Everything in nature is problematic in excess. That's why those who have "familial hypercholesterolemia", in particular, should be monitored clinically.

But note that this is a rare genetic disease, which gives the much higher rates of cholesterol to the standard (higher than 4 g /L =  10 mmol/l, where the average is 2 g/L = 5 mmol/L).

This means that 99.9% of the population, cholesterol is anything but a reliable indicator of vascular health.

Having a bit of cholesterol is pretty good news, because it is a protective factor for many diseases (cancer, infection, Alzheimer's, diabetes).

Talk to your doctor, look with him how to avoid taking medications on the sole basis of your cholesterol, HDL or LDL.

Rather, look at your lifestyle and diet. Above all, act: stop smoking, protect yourself from the stress and do more physical activity.

In a recent article was published in one of the most prestigious medical journal in the world, the British Medical Journal

Scientists studied 30 cohorts of patients, representing 68,000 people. Their conclusion is without doubt:

  • In half of the studied cases, the rate of « bad cholesterol » (LDL) had no relation with the risk of death;

  • In the other half, researchers found that patients who had a high LDL lived longer

You read well. It is not a typo : one has less risk to die prematurely when one has a high LDL or bad cholesterol, after 60 years of age

"This discovery contradicts « the cholesterol hypothesis » (i.e. that cholesterol, especially LDL, is bad in itself). Since elderly people with a high LDL cholesterol live as long or longer that those with a low LDL cholesterol, our analysis gives reasons to question the “cholesterol hypothesis”



And if it were not clear enough, the authors precise that this has implications for those people who take anti-cholesterol drugs:

 

"Moreover, our study is an argument to re-evaluate the official recommendations on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases through the pharmaceutical reduction of LDL cholesterol on elderly people."
